Shop for Furniture Using Augmented Reality with Wayfair’s Android App

Shop for Furniture Using Augmented Reality with Wayfair’s Android App

Today, AR-enabled commerce is increasing exponentially. In fact, Wayfair is the latest online retailer to adopt augmented reality technology to enhance its user experience. The company is using Google’s ARCore platform to visualize its products inside the user’s house before purchasing. Wayfair is also one of the first companies to use ARCore in a Android mobile application. ARCore is Google’s response to Apple’s ARKit, and allows developers to integrate AR technology into their Android applications. It has a potential audience of over 100 million Android devices.

Enabling phones to sense the environment

Wayfair isn’t the first retailer to swiftly implement ARCore support now that it’s ready. eBay recently unveiled a service for sellers that uses AR technology to help them pick the correct shipping box. It has promised more AR-enabled products later this year. This week, IKEA also published an Android version of their augmented reality software IKEA Place. Other businesses, such as Amazon and Target, have been experimenting with augmented reality to assist online shoppers to buy furniture. That too from a virtual living room on a website, instead of visiting the store.

Assisting furniture retailers to sell more

Augmented Reality addresses all the retailer’s issues. It also helps them cater to the issues faced by online shoppers when they try to buy furniture online, instead of in person.

While buying online, shoppers don’t get a sense of what a piece of furniture will look like when placed in the room. They may wonder, “Will the new sofa go well with the existing curtains, carpet, and other furniture?” “Will it fit in a particular area of the room?”

Recreating your living room

Wayfair’s app includes a 3D imaging feature that allows customers to visualize furniture in the virtual living room. This allows you to see if an object will fit into the space without having to use a measuring tape. It also gives customers a visual representation of how the room will appear with the new furniture. The virtual living room concept will accelerate a shopper’s buying decision.

Wayfair is the online marketplace that helps people furnish their homes. It has been at the forefront of home improvement eCommerce. It has been developing new technology that truly empowers people in the home decoration and improvement space. Recently, Wayfair has launched augmented reality to help customers visualize their favorite items before they buy them.

Additionally, the business has recently improved the AR capability in the iOS app. Thus allowing consumers to record a video of the item in AR as opposed to just capturing a snapshot. This function is similar to Snapchat in that you simply touch and hold the record button to record. You may then move about the furniture in the video to record it in 3D. This you can then share with friends and family, and seek their glowing opinions.

This feature will be available in the Android version soon.

In the meantime, the Wayfair app for Android is available here.
